Madeira – PR1

The PR1 is also known as the Vereda do Pico Ruivo, and it’s one of the most popular and well-maintained hiking trails on the island. This trail covers the highest peaks of Madeira in a circular route, from Pico d’Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and back. The trail covers approximately 10 kilometers and can be completed in about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the scenery. While the PR1 is relatively short, it is considered moderately challenging due to its steep ascents and descents.

Our Experience

Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, lush greenery, and a climate that seems tailor-made for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re a nature lover looking for an unforgettable hiking experience, the PR1 trail should be at the top of your list. This trail offers an incredible opportunity to explore Madeira’s diverse ecosystems, from verdant forests to dramatic coastal cliffs. Lace up your hiking boots, and let’s take a virtual journey through this magnificent hiking trail.

Route Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo (10KM – 3-4 hours return hike)

We rented a car for our holiday from Sunnycars, and drove to Pico do Arieiro parking. There are no clear dedicated parking spots, but it’s a flat terrain where you can find a place. We would definitely recommend you to visit this peak another day around 6AM to watch the sunrise above the clouds. In that case you could park here, as this parking is higher up (15min walk). However, there is a 2 hour maximum on parking on this spot.

What to pack

Proper hiking gear, including sturdy footwear, is essential, and hikers should be in reasonably good physical condition. Be prepared for changing weather conditions, as Madeira’s climate can be unpredictable.

  • Hiking poles (nice to have)
  • Enough water – at least carry 2 liters with you
  • Small backpack
  • Some energy bars
