The approximately 112 km long Mullerthal Trail consists of three loops (Route 1, Route 2, and Route 3). Route 2 includes fascinating rock landscapes with gorges, canyons, mazes, and the famous Schéissendëmpel waterfall. It represents pure nature experience and adventure. Whether it’s the rock landscape of Berdorf, the dark rock passage Kuelscheier, the legendary Wollefsschlucht – there’s a lot to discover here.
Route 2 can be hiked in 2 daily stages and leads through the heart of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland and to the most spectacular rock formations in the region. It also passes by the symbol of Luxembourg tourism, the Schiessentümpel – a waterfall with a small, romantic bridge.
Our Experience
Day 1 Echternach – Mullerthal (23KM – 6,5 hours)
As we live in The Netherlands, we woke up early and drove to Echternach to arrive around 10:30. We parked our car at Parc du Lac, which was the only parking lot where you could park your car for more than 2 hours. It’s a great spot as it’s free and close to the trail. We went in April ’23 and at that moment, they were renovating many parking lots in Echternach, so it might be easier in the near future to park closer to the city center.
Then we started our walk. It started off with great views surrounded by green and the entire trail has great signs to help you navigate. There are multiple ways to shorten your hike when needed. We ended the first day around 16:00 in Mullerthal, where we had a drink at Brasserie Heringer Millen on the sunny terrace before we headed towards our accommodation for the night Le Cigalon. We freshened up in our room and played a card game near the fireplace at the reception. They offer a 5-course meal, which came in pretty good as were really hungry. The town Mullerthal offers, next to the outstanding nature, not so much during Spring. There is one other restaurant, a camping and a hotel, but that’s it.
Day 2 Mullerthal – Echternach (14,6KM – 5,5 hours)
This day started with lots of rain, but still we had a great time hiking. After walking for 30 min you’ll already experience the first canyons you have to go through, so bring a head torch! If you can, pack light. We took our 75 Liter backpacks but they also had to go though the narrow shafts. Many steps from carved stone navigate you though the rocky landscape. The rest of the hike is walking a few hundred meters higher next to a way to Echternach that circles through the mountains. It’s a great place for motorcycles. The end of the route provides a great viewpoint of the city of Echternach. We got ourselves some ice cream from the tank station next to the parking lot and celebrated our hike! We went to MacDonalds on our way back to The Netherlands.
