Mullerthal – R3

The approximately 112 km long Mullerthal Trail consists of three loops (Route 1, Route 2, and Route 3). Route 3 includes fascinating views on castles, chateaus, rocky landscapes, mazes, and also the famous Schéissendëmpel waterfall. It represents pure nature experience and adventure. It’s a really diverse route with beautiful flora and fauna all around you.

Route 3 can be hiked in 2 daily stages and leads through the heart of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland and to the most spectacular rock formations in the region. It also passes by the symbol of Luxembourg tourism, the Schiessentümpel – a waterfall with a small, romantic bridge.

Our Experience

Day 1: Mullerthal – Larochette (20KM, 4,5 hours)

On Friday evening we arrived at Le Cigalon and parked the car just in front of the hotel. The next morning, after we had breakfast, we were ready to start the day. We asked at the reception if it was okay to leave the car on the parking, and that was allowed. Otherwise, there is a parking over here where you could park the car. In front of the hotel you could also start Mullerthal Trail Route 2, but as we planned to hike Route 3, our start was situated behind the hotel. It was an easy start, and after 20 min we were walking along a river surrounded by green. Halfway our hike, a beautiful ruin appeared: Chateau Beaufort. You can enter the ruin for €5,- p.p. As we didn’t want to take the full tour, we paid €1,- (they allowed only cash) so we could use the toilet and still enjoy the view inside. As we felt we could use a coffee, we walked up to the center of Beaufort to have a cappuccino at L’Auberge Rustique before we continued our hike. Fueled with some caffeine, we were up for the second part of the hike. This part consisted of a landscape characterized by gentle, rolling hills and valleys, alternated with forests and rocky formations. Near the end of this part of the route, we passed the Schutshutte with a great view on the Larochette Castle. We checked in at Youth Hostel Larochette, freshened up and went into town for dinner. As it was summer, many restaurants were on summer break, so after trying a few pizza places, we ended up at Restaurant Op der Bleech. It was a nice square where most of the people (mainly tourists) were sitting, but keep in mind that the service here takes up to an hour to serve your meal. After we had some drinks and could feel our tired legs, we went back to the hostel for a good night sleep.

Day 2: Larochette – Mullerthal (17,5KM, 4 hours)

We slept great and had a simple breakfast at the Youth Hostel. As it was sunny, we had a great view on the castle when we started the hike. It was a great experience that we turned left at a crossroad, walked up a stairs and immediately were surrounded by nature and rocky landscapes again. the forest made place for farmland. We had a nice break at a picknick table under an old tree with views on sunflowers and horses. Then the farmland made place for a damp dreamy forest with lots of moss and beautiful mushrooms. We even went a little off the route to look at a sun dial on the top of a rock. The forest with moss changed to waterfalls, creeks and puddles with clear water. A more rocky landscape followed that made clear we headed into Mullerthal again. With some wooden paths, stairs and bridges we arrived at the Schiessentümpel, where we came across more and more people. We entered Mullerthal town and had a victory ice-cream at Mëllerdall Plage, a local event with food trucs, games and a beach look-and-feel, that takes place in the weekends from 28th of July until 20th of August. Around 15:00, we went back to our car and drove back home with a vacation vibe and satisfied feeling!
